Position: Eastern Roasting Supervisor

Department: Operations

Location: Durham, NC

Reports To: Director of Operations

FLSA Status: NON-EXEMPT, 6504

 

Job Overview:

Our production process has two distinct steps - roasting and packaging. The entire manufacturing process in our roastery is managed by an operations manager that works closely with a roasting supervisor and a production supervisor.

The roasting supervisor leads the team of roasters by managing our daily roast schedule, team member training, equipment maintenance, and addressing any issues in the roasting phase of our manufacturing process. They assist the operations manager with personnel management by collaboratively participating in hiring, reviews, and other staffing management. 

This position requires a high degree of subject matter expertise, but also a strong proficiency in personnel management. They are experts in the way that we roast coffee and how this function works in our overall business model and strategy. This person is a self-starter but works proficiently in a team, they are able to focus on day-to-day issues without losing focus on our bigger goals, they are able to help team members help each other, and they are professionally engaged with the team and company. 

Applicants for this position must have 5+ years of relevant experience or training in commercial coffee roasting and personnel management. It is preferred that they have experience in managing people and inventory. Any warehouse, lean manufacturing, or barista experience is beneficial.

 

Job Duties:

Personnel Management

  • Motivate and inspire an engaged team of 6 people or more
  • Facilitate departmental and individual goal-setting in alignment with the Company Plan through Strategic planning sessions 
  • Responsible for quarterly and annual employee performance assessments 

Coffee Production

  • Manage green coffee inventory and daily production schedules.
  • Roaster and roasting equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Training apprentice and coffee roasters.

Facilities

  • Helping facilitate regulatory compliance.
  • Responsible for working area conditions being safe, clean, and efficient.
  • Helping with weekly and monthly facility walk-throughs to build punch lists for warehouse needs.

Inventory Management

  • Manage weekly green coffee usage, counts, PO generation of green coffee.
  • Create and maintain organization and count systems to minimize inventory variance 
  • Responsible for inventory counts and variances

ERP

  • Managing processes and process documentation for daily roasting fulfillment 
  • Troubleshoot and solve roasting exceptions.
  • Collaborate with IT to constantly improve ERP systems.

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of commercial specialty coffee roasting or relevant experience
  • 5+ years of personnel management or relevant experience
  • Valid driver’s license 

Preferred Skills:

  • Manufacturing or Food Processing education or experience
  • Warehouse management
  • Personnel management
  • Barista or Specialty Coffee experience

The physical requirements of this position: 

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

The visual acuity requirements (including color, depth perception, and field vision) of this position:

  • The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. 
  • The employee is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. 
  • The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned (i.e., custodial, food services, general laborer, etc.) or to make general observations of facilities or structures (i.e., security guard, inspection, etc.).

 

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position:

  • Subject to environmental conditions - protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes; subject to noise - there is sufficient noise at times to cause the incumbent to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level.
