Job Description

The Coffee and Tea Quality Specialist designs and executes quality driven evaluations, primarily in post roast coffee quality, and liaisons with internal teams related to coffee, tea, and other product quality issues and new product launches. This role is the lead liaison to the roasting and production teams, supporting inventory and quality management and any plant projects related to coffee, tea, and/or sustainability.  This role is also the lead liaison to the customer service and wholesale teams, supporting education, launches, and general external stakeholder communications. 

Reports to: Director of Coffee, Tea, and Sustainability




Post-roast coffee quality evaluations, lab responsibilities, and roasting plant inventory management  (70% of workload)

  • Implement Philz’ post roast quality assurance program with Green Coffee Quality Manager and Roasting Operations Manager
    • Execute daily post roast component and blend physical and sensory evaluations
    • Serve as the expert on sensory blend performance in order to make real time menu decisions (ie: pass/fail/ hold/reallocate)
    • Compile and report physical and sensory evaluation data and trends 
  • Execute and manage lab responsibilities: 
    • Perform and analyze roasted coffee and tea physical evaluations
    • Perform and analyze  brewed coffee and tea extraction evaluations
    • Set up/break down cuppings and lab testing
    • Green coffee lab work support as needed
  • Manage roasting plant green bean inventory 
    • Monitor and maintain green bean par inventory levels
    • Coordinate transfers from offsite green bean warehouses
    • Support End of Month and End of Year reconciliations


Education, R&D, and Project Support (30% of workload) 

  • Support team in delivering cross functional subject matter expertise through training and communications and customer service issue support
  • Support strategic sourcing, new product development, sustainability, and product improvement initiatives as determined and directed by Director of Coffee, Tea & Sustainability
    • Supplier and cross-functional relationship management
    • Financial analysis, cost savings, inventory management, and reporting

  • Ability to travel locally


  • Minimum 5 years specialty coffee experience 
  • Minimum 2 years Cupping lab experience
  • Knowledge of specialty coffee brewing standards and equipment  
  • Technology systems experience preferred: NetSuite, Cropster, Eximware, Google Suite
  • Q Grader/Specialty Coffee Association Coffee Taster pathway/equivalent certification preferred
  • Tea knowledge/experience preferred
  • Project management experience and passion for sustainability preferred
