Job Description

This team member will oversee the Saxbys Roastery facility in Philadelphia - serving the cafes and wholesale partners of Saxbys, a Certified B Corp and pioneer of The Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform.  The Roastery Operations Manager will have Lead Roaster duties; managing production & quality control of all coffee product.  They will be responsible for the smooth operation of the roastery facility, which includes a distribution center that maintains, tracks, and fulfills orders across all channels (cafes, e-commerce, wholesale).  

 

What You Will Own

  • Production of daily roasts ranging in size from small to large batches on corresponding production machinery (Loring 15K, Loring 70K)

  • Manage the roastery staff; which currently includes one Production Coordinator

  • Maintain the roastery facility; ensuring a safe, proper and extremely clean work environment, while complying with necessary food and safety guidelines at all times

  • Own an inventory management system that logs & tracks all inventory (including equipment) stored at the roastery - including coffee, tea, merchandise, cafe product

  • Conduct monthly inventory counts, in the inventory management system, on all items housed in the facility to reconcile any variances between actual vs. tracked inventory

  • Host partners and prospective partners for cupping, tasting, and/or roastery tours

  • Understand in-depth knowledge of Saxbys roasting profiles, techniques, and blend compositions 

  • Lead Quality Control of coffee product, and adjust coffee profiles when necessary to maintain product quality targets

  • Fulfillment of orders; including daily shipments to cafes (30+ across the country), owning the entire fulfillment process for e-commerce (includes guest recovery & troubleshooting), and maintaining outstanding satisfactions with wholesale partners 

  • Write & update program guides for all current coffee equipment and brewing techniques used in cafe 

  • Procure & lead installation & calibration process of coffee equipment (espresso machines, grinders, brewers) in new cafes, and assist with replacing malfunctioning equipment in existing cafes

  • Support HQ Teams on all roastery related functions; especially Product & Operations Implementation, Marketing, and Cafe Operations 

  • Assist with troubleshooting coffee equipment and roastery fulfillment issues with cafes; using a ticketing system that ensures a <24 hour response time

 

What Does Success Look Like

  • Consistent production of all coffee products; meeting all quality standards

  • 98% of cafe orders received accurate & on-time (within 2 days) 

  • Minimal waste of green coffee

  • E-comm coffee sales increase year over year 

  • Maintain roastery facility to be ‘ready for visitors’ 100% of the time

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of production roasting experience, preferably with Loring 

  • Prior experience with roasting tools such as Cropster 

  • A desire to learn and ability to apply and share knowledge 

  • Must be a team player; collaborating with cross-functional teams

  • Must be able to work independently; often executing roasting process from beginning to end

  • Must have an entrepreneurial, self-starter approach to problem-solving while demonstrating an ability to take direction from leadership

  • A passion for coffee and an understanding of our role in the coffee chain 

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively 

  • Recognize the value in repetition and the consistency of daily activities

  • An extreme level of attention to detail and focus

  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Physical Requirements 

    • Ability to perform the physical demands of roasting and lifting green and roasted coffee; ability to stoop, kneel, push, pull, lift, carry up to 75 lbs

    • Ability to operate a forklift 

    • Ascend and descend ladders, stairs, ramps

    • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time each day
