Job Description

Production Roaster

About us:

Coffeebar was born in the granite of the High Sierras in Truckee, CA 2010. We are a radically inclusive, community-focused café that serves up the fuel that propels you throughout the day. We’re skiers, snowboarders, mountain climbers, coffee geeks, surfers, yogis, bikers, latte artists and all-around adventure seeking, ass kickers who are focused on making a positive difference in the communities in which we serve our special brand of hospitality!

Internally we are highly focused, goal-driven team striving to connect the dots from farmer to guest by bringing high quality, sustainably sourced coffee, food and wine to our guests. We are running a fast growing, profitable, self-sustaining company that bridges the gap from Reno to the Bay.

Externally we are passionate, selfless hospitalians always at the ready to provide our guests with the most intimate of experiences in our fast paced, Italian-inspired café environment. We believe that we are only as good as the next cup that we make. We exist to make our guests feel that every Coffeebar experience gives them everything they need to fell welcome in our world.

About the position:

As a Production Roaster, you will support all aspects of the Coffeebar Roastery including green coffee management, roasting, order fulfillment, quality control, internal deliveries, and occasionally assisting with service in the intimate public-facing cafe that shares the roasting space. Under the guidance of the Head Roaster, you will be expected to continuously develop your knowledge around roasting and evaluating coffees in order to maintain quality and consistency in our roasted coffee. Our roasting operation is truly a team effort, and we hope you will contribute your own perspectives to our ongoing dialogue around our approach to coffee.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Roast blends and single-origin coffees on our San Francisican SF-25 roaster, matching the set profile using Cropster roast tracking software.
  • Build high-level understanding of roast manipulation theory and contribute to development of new roast profiles.
  • Roast samples using an Ikawa Pro sample roaster.
  • Create a daily roast schedule based on internal and external orders.
  • Perform basic daily roaster maintenance, including proper warm up and cool down procedures and cleaning.
  • Maintain a daily order board to organize/track coffee order prep.
  • Weigh and bag roasted coffee for both internal and external orders and organize packaged coffee for delivery.
  • Package online coffee orders and fulfill them using our eCommerce and shipping software (WooCommerce and Shippo).
  • Deliver coffee to Coffeebar locations in the Reno/Tahoe area (using our Sprinter van).
  • Assist with receiving and organizing green coffee stock.
  • Participate in both production roast QC and sample evaluation cuppings with the Head Roaster and Roastery Team.
  • Develop proficiency to lead the Roastery Team in performing evaluative cuppings in the absence of the Head Roaster.
  • Contribute to discussions around applying cupping results to roast manipulation.
  • Maintain open and active communication with the Head Roaster and Roastery Team around product inventory, maintenance issues/needs, order fulfillment status, and other critical operational needs.
  • Assist with daily Roastery Cafe operations as needed, which may include cash register operation, brewing batch coffee or pour overs, and/or filling in as a secondary barista. (Scheduled cafe support time not to exceed 8 hrs/week except in special circumstances.)
  • Foster an atmosphere of learning by taking ownership of your own development and encouraging the continued growth of your Roastery teammates and other Coffeebar team members who visit the Roastery.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 1-2 years production roasting experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Excel/Google Sheets and other basic computer skills
  • Able to lift/push/pull 30 lbs repeatedly throughout a shift
  • Clean driving record and comfort driving large vehicles (delivery van) and in inclement weather (snow)
  • Comfort performing basic mechanical tasks

Expected workload:

This is a full-time, on-site hourly position (30-40 hours/per week).

Compensation: $18-20 per hour DOE. This is a full-time position eligible for our comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision.

This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending/crouching, and lifting/moving coffee and other large or bulky items throughout the day. You will need to verbally communicate with the team on duty with you frequently. Our Roastery does have heating and AC, but you may still feel the extremes of seasonal temperatures, especially when loading delivery vehicles or performing deliveries.
