Job Description

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Peace Coffee's mission is to make exceptional-tasting, fair-trade organic coffee that sustains the livelihoods of the people who grow, roast and sell it; preserves and protects the environment that produces it; and delights the taste buds of the people who drink it.
 
PURPOSE Oversee Quality/Safety Program; Develop & maintain production roast profiles/blends; Manage Roasters and ensure they are trained to understand quality standards and safety requirements.  
DESCRIPTION

Essential Duties (98%)

 

Quality Management: to oversee Peace Coffee’s Quality Control Program (30%)

  • Maintain protocols used to inspect, test, and evaluate production samples

  • Perform detailed and recorded inspections of final products so the products are up to industry and company standards

  • Ensure that profiles adhere to Peace Coffee quality standards

  • Evaluate samples using industry-standard methods, compare production profiles, gauge variation between samples, machines, and lot changes

  • Track, analyze, and lead root cause analysis for all quality and customer complaint issues within production

  • Train production roasters on quality control measures to relate to product improvement

 

Roasting: to create and maintain roast profiles along with daily production roasting (20%)

  • Continue developing the skill and craft of roasting, along with daily production

  • Develop and write aroma and flavor profiles based on cup characteristics

  • Working according to deadlines for the development of profiles/seasonal

 

Manage and Train Roasters: to be a resource for each roaster and guide their professional development (20%)

  • Provide ongoing training and mentorship of Production Roasters, including cupping, quality control, preventative maintenance, and profile roasting

  • On-board new hires and assign them to training sessions

  • Implementing tools and systems to help track and monitor daily work

  • Search for gaps in training procedures that should be updated to ensure safety and productivity among team members

  • Identify future training needs and create a curriculum to facilitate that training

  • Hold regular check-ins and modified cupping sessions

  • Assess team member's individual skills, talents, performance, and productivity and prepare written evaluations with advice for improvement

 

Food Safety Team: collaborate & maintain an effective food safety system (10%)

  • Responsible for formulating and updating the food safety manual.

  • Ensure implementation of sanitary and hygiene conditions during production and packing of food products.

  • Overall responsibility for initiating corrective action in the event of product non-conformance.

  • Responsible for checking daily reports for further improvement and taking corrective action if necessary.

  • Coordinate with third parties such as labs, certification, regulatory authorities, etc.

  • Responsible for internal verification of day-to-day activities.

  • Responsible for product quality, safety, and for maintaining hygenic conditions. Receiving raw materials through to finished goods is the responsibility of Food safety team members.

  • During operation, maintain a hygienic atmosphere in the food industry areas.

  • Conduct internal auditing and invite third-party audits.

  • Responding to authority inspections and further rectifying the non-conformances.

  • Serve as the front line to handle food safety complaints. Consolidated findings, non-conformances, incidents, and reasoning is the plan.

  • Periodically review all food safety procedures and instructions, to ensure they remain current.

 

Supervision and Company Communication (8%)

  • Hold regular check-in with the Director of Operations, connecting on cup specs, profile maintenance, general machine maintenance, and upcoming

  • Oversee roasting team's PTO coverage, payroll entries, and day to day needs

 

Roasting Machines: aid in the upkeep of roasting equipment (5%)

  • Perform daily maintenance as needed for optimum machine capability

  • Participate in periodic extensive cleanings of roasting equipment and production space

  • Address mechanical errors as they occur

 

Coffee Education: to be a resource of coffee, sensory, and roasting knowledge (5%)

  • Support the overall coffee education program with the Director of Operations

  • Co-lead internal events to bring awareness and knowledge of our mission, quality, and coffee

  • Attend industry events on issues related to coffee, including roasting/sensory training and trips to coffee-producing origins

  • Be a resource for roasting and quality control information to both staff and customers

  • prepare written evaluations with advice for improvement

Non-Essential Duties (2%)

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma, or equivalent, is required. Bachelor’s Degree is strongly preferred.

  • 3+ years of profile roasting and cupping experience required

  • Sample roasting experience is strongly preferred

  • Strong desire to teach people about roasting and coffee

  • Demonstrated success as a manager and supervisor

  • Comfortable with making strategic decisions in a constantly shifting environment

  • Able to work as part of a team and independently

  • Mechanical experience desired

  • Basic math and computer skills

  • Ability to solve problems and attention to detail required

  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner

  • Ability to travel - both domestically and to coffee-producing communities internationally

Actively communicate issues with equipment or lack of understanding/needs for additional training), and Strong Sense of Urgency (ability to filter out the noise, act as a high-performing operational unit, and deliver daily requirements).

    • The Roasting team is responsible for Quality Control (Understand the specifications for various roasting profiles and ensure the product meets specifications. Conduct routine cupping, and green testing, and record other measurements to address customer concerns. Product Development (partner with Sales/Customer Service, Marketing, and Dir. Coffee to build new products and optimize current products for evolving market needs and/or customer feedback.)

 

Physical Requirements

  • Work environment: This job is often performed in a warehouse where conditions can be hot, and dusty and there is continuous industrial noise. Some time is also spent in a coffee lab where conditions are milder.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly, on occasion up to 75 pounds.

  • This job requires standing, bending, walking, and lifting on a continuous basis throughout the day.

  • Frequent computer use/monitoring is required while working with the coffee roasting machines.

  • While assisting with coffee production: ability to climb ladders, lift and carry bins up to 45 lbs. above 5ft., perform repetitive tasks, and use cleaning products of medium toxicity.

  • Required to adhere to Food Safety policies and protocols.

  • Ability to do a 2-person team lift of 150 pounds, as needed.

  • Ability to safely operate powered equipment (forklift, a power jack, powered tools, etc.)
