Job purpose

World Coffee Research (WCR) is a 501(c)5 non-profit agricultural research organization formed by the global coffee industry in 2012 to drive collaborative innovation to ensure the future of coffee. WCR focuses on research with the potential to dramatically improve coffee productivity, coffee quality, climate resilience, and farmer livelihoods to support origin diversity (the continued availability of high-quality coffee from many producing countries).

We are looking for a driven, curious and nimble Communication Manager to drive a wide range of communication functions tailored to WCR’s diverse, global stakeholders—from coffee roasters, buyers, and sustainability professionals, to researchers, to governments, to technicians and farmers. The person in this role supports WCR to make the case for the urgency and importance of agricultural R&D in the face of the climate crisis and supports our ambition to remain the industry’s thought leader on breeding and seed system modernization. While executing day-to-day communications tasks, the Manager will engage creatively and strategically in efforts to enhance WCR’s reputation, develop narratives, mine for stories, support our diverse and global team, educate and engage stakeholders, and shape public perception of the organization. The Communications Manager is a crucial member of WCR’s communications and development team and will be supported to grow professionally and personally.


Key accountabilities

  •  External Communications 60%
    • Seek new and creative approaches to increase external awareness of WCR’s mission and impact and refine WCR’s content strategy, using a combination of strategic insight and analytical data
    • Execute WCR’s digital communications strategy using a data-driven approach, including email marketing and daily management of social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn), from content calendar planning to social listening, creating multimedia content and analytics tracking
    • Develop, write, edit, and design communication products tailored for WCR’s diverse external stakeholder audiences including website copy and news articles, infographics, press releases, explanatory documents, social media posts, multimedia content, and presentation slide decks
    • Assist with communications activities in support of member stewardship and public sector fundraising (supporting member stewardship communications for <$10k members and updating member-facing communication materials, member lists, member presentations, letters, etc.)
    • Support print and digital publication processes for WCR technical publications and white papers (e.g., Arabica Varieties Catalog)
    • Assist with planning WCR virtual and in-person events, including promotion, planning and logistics (e.g., bookings, technical and/or on-site support + run-throughs), content refinement (e.g., feedback to presenters), etc.
    • Cultivate positive relationships with coffee industry influencers and media

  •  Internal Communications 20%
    • Create and manage internal communications programming that supports information flow and story sharing across a dispersed global team
    • Contribute to the development of internal communications infrastructure and communication programs directed towards internal initiatives

  • Administrative tasks in support of communications 20%
    • Maintain WCR photos archive
    • Maintain WCR media tracking database
    • Manage contacts database
    • Prepare communications purchase requests, budgets, and reports



  •  Education
    • BS/BA in Communications, English, or related field


  • Experience
    • Minimum five to seven years of communications experience
    • Proven success designing and executing marketing and communications strategies and campaigns

  • Knowledge
    • English fluency required, second language (Spanish and/or French) strongly preferred
    • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media
    • Knowledge of principles of effective design
    • Knowledge of production processes for print and digital media products
    • Knowledge of, or interest in, agricultural research, coffee agriculture, breeding and seed systems, agricultural development, international/global perspectives, and/or the climate crisis is a plus

  • Skills
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including writing, editing, proofreading
    • Graphic design, photography, video or other media skills
    • Strong organization and project management skills with an eye for detail, ability to plan, prioritize, and implement projects in a fast-paced environment
    • Must be able to think analytically and strategically
    • Skill in interpreting analytical data and using it to refine content strategy
    • Strong interviewing, fact-checking, and research skills
    • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency; Adobe Creative Suite proficiency (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat) + graphic design skills; Skills with online communications platforms such as web CMSs, CRMs, Hootsuite, Mailchimp/Constant Contact
