Job Description

Lexington Coffee Roasters has spent three decades sourcing, roasting, and brewing award-winning specialty coffee in the heart of Virginia. We are looking for a Director of Coffee to join our squad, roast great coffees, and help mold the direction of a brand that placed coffees on Coffee Review’s Top 30 Coffees of the Year five of the last eight years. The Director of Coffee’s chief responsibilities will include setting green bean strategy, acting as Head Roaster, and educating customers and staff about coffee, equipment, and proper procedures. In setting green bean strategy, candidate will source a varied and well-balanced selection of flavor profiles, processing methods, roast levels and price points. As Head Roaster, the DoC will perform sample, profile, and production roasts to Lexington Coffee Roasters standards. In addition, the DoC will serve as a chief subject matter expert on all things coffee - beans, brewing, equipment – and be able to effectively communicate that expertise to others.  This position also requires less glamorous but equally important responsibilities such as green coffee inventory management and the ability to substitute if the Production Manager is absent, including setting production schedules, and managing production workflow. The Director of Coffee should be an expert cupper, accepting of feedback on profile roasts, and eager to tweak roasts as informed by cupping data. Strong technical and mechanical awareness as it pertains to roasters and other equipment is also required. The ability to engage in sales calls, demonstrate proper use of brewing equipment, and interact with customers is desired but not required.   • Green coffee sourcing - pursuing a varied and well balanced selection of flavor profiles, processing methods, roast levels and price points, with a commitment to sustainability.
  • Green coffee inventory management - experience in a warehouse environment and familiarity with Cropster or similar software is a plus.
  • Operation of production and sample roasters. Familiarity with Cropster Roast Intelligence or similar is a plus. We utilize 12k and 24k Dietrich Infrared Roasters for production. Previous experience with Dietrich is not required.
  • Maintain a sanitary work environment at all times.
  • Work, at times, with rest of production team to fulfill production orders, including following packaging and shipping procedures.
  • Supervise cuppings and perform other quality control tests through a full range of brewing methods.
  • Potentially act as a representative with wholesale clients; educating them on coffee and best practices, and providing technical advice.
  • Enthusiastic ambassador of Lexington Coffee within the coffee community.

  • Extreme passion and knowledge of all things coffee
  • 3+ years of roasting experience
  • 2+ years green coffee buying experience
  • Demonstrated ability to profile exceptional coffees
  • Q grader certification a plus
  • Cognizant of the balance between objective quality and subjective preference
  • Leadership skills, ability to guide production manager and roasting team
  • Highly proficient cupping skills
  • Ability to work with new/existing wholesale customers (desired)
  • Barista skills (desired)
  • Basic math and computer skills, including comfort with spreadsheets


This is a salaried position. The hours of work are Monday-Friday. Occasional weekend work may be required as circumstances demand. Salary is $45-55k plus bonuses, commensurate with experience. This position is located in Lexington, Virginia
